A Revolution in USP Laser Drilling: Taper-Free Machining of Technical Ceramics

Technology, Material & Application
USP laser-drilled Al₂O₃ ceramic sample

The technical article of LCP in the magazine “Mikroproduktion” examines taper-free ultra-short pulse laser drilling of hard, brittle materials, with a particular focus on thicker materials.

When laser drilling hard, brittle materials such as high-performance ceramics, taper has long been considered unavoidable. Especially with thicker ceramics, this so-called taper led to limitations in quality and functionality.

In our latest technical article, “Mittels Trepanierbohren den Taper elemininieren,”[only in German] published in Mikroproduktion, Issue 01-02/2026, we demonstrate that USP (ultra-short pulse) laser systems with optimized trepan optics now enable the achievement of precise, cylindrical bores.
